Abhi is an Instructor in Dr. Celeste Karch’s laboratory in the Department of Psychiatry. During her PhD, Abhi elucidated the regulatory role of cytokine signaling pathways in the function of lipid antigen presenting molecule CD1d and restricted innate lymphocytes, Natural Killer T (NKT) cells. For her postdoctoral work, Abhi chose to work in neuroimmunology, whereby her initial work was focused at understanding mechanisms involved in CD4+ T cell-mediated motor neuron survival in peripheral nerve injury and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Thereafter, Abhi carried out preclinical testing of antisense oligonucleotides against α2-Na+/K+ ATPase, which is upregulated in astrocytes and contributes to non-cell autonomous neurodegeneration in ALS. Her current work aims to understand TREM2 signaling in neurodegenerative diseases in human induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC)-differentiated microglial cells. She has experience in different forms of scientific writing including grants, manuscripts, review articles and is an ad-hoc reviewer for multiple journals.

He also received his MS in Applied Physics from Osaka University in Osaka, Japan, working in the Nano-photonics lab of Dr. Satoshi Kawata. After spending five years in Japan, he joined the lab of Dr. Janice Robertson to conduct his PhD research. He now studies thermodynamics and kinetics of membrane protein assembly in lipid membranes using homo-dimeric Cl-/H+ antiporter CLC-ec1 as a model system. Outside of his research, he is also interested in photography, illustration, and color psychology.

Lily is a PhD student in the Molecular Cell Biology program. She received her BS in Biological Sciences from the University of Notre Dame in 2018. Her current research in the lab of Dr. Aaron DiAntonio focuses on understanding how neuronal dysfunction contributes to metabolic abnormalities. She has experience writing and editing manuscripts, review articles, fellowship applications, editorials, and textbook chapters.

Nai-Wen Tien, PhD

Nai-Wen works as a postdoctoral researcher in Dr. Daniel Kerschensteiner’s lab in the Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Department. Her training covers the cellular to the circuit and behavioral aspects of neuroscience. Nai-Wen enjoys reading a wide range of scientific topics in neuroscience and has experience writing grants and scientific papers, reviewing articles, and creating illustration figures and presentations for scientific talks.

Jess is a Neuroscience PhD student in the lab of Dr. Meaghan Creed. She is studying the aversive nature of opioid withdrawal and its neural underpinnings in the reward and aversion circuits of the brain. She received her BA in Psychology at St. Norbert College and worked as a research technician at the University of Maryland-Baltimore and Washington University. Jess has experience in writing fellowship applications, scientific manuscripts, and review articles.

Emery T Usher, PhD

Emery is a postdoctoral research associate in the department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biophysics (BMB). Emery earned his PhD in Biochemistry, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology from Penn State in 2022, after which he joined in the Holehouse lab in BMB. His research employs computational and experimental biophysics methods to interrogate the behavior of intrinsically disordered proteins (IDPs). Emery has ample experience writing, editing, and reviewing manuscripts, review articles, and grant/fellowship applications.

Rachana Vaidya, PhD

Rachana is a Postdoctoral Researcher working in a unique co-mentored position in the department of Physical Therapy with Dr. Jennifer Zellers and Orthopaedic Surgery with Dr. Simon Tang. She received her PhD from the University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she used in-vitro model systems to study the effect of diabetes on bone fragility and increased fracture risk. Now, her research focuses on studying the impact of diabetes on tendons at the tendon rehab lab in physical therapy; and elucidating the signaling pathways in the bone to understand how diabetes affects bone remodeling using diabetic mice models at the Tang Lab. Rachana has experience editing conference abstracts, manuscripts, and generating scientific figures and illustrations for presentations and publications.

Ryan A Valdez, BS

Ryan is a graduate student in the Plant and Microbial Biosciences program. They received their BS from the University of Arizona, majoring in both Plant Sciences and Literacy, Learning, and Leadership (with a focus on community education). They have research experience in educational psychology, higher education, plant sciences, and microbiology. They are currently a member of Dr. Petra Levin’s lab, where they are using CRISPR interference technology and classical genetics to dissect the contribution of lipopolysaccharide – a target of last-resort antibiotics – to gram-negative bacterial growth and physiology. Beyond research, Ryan is passionate about mentorship and science communication, and they are looking forward to a career that combines these passions.

Pranav Kumar Vemula, PhD

Pranav is a postdoctoral research associate in the lab of Dr. Timothy Miller in the Department of Neurology. He holds a bachelor’s and master’s degree in pharmaceutical sciences, with a master’s specialization in pharmacology. He earned his PhD from the University of Otago, New Zealand researching altered brain arginine metabolism in tauopathies such as Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal dementia, and progressive supranuclear palsy. His current research involves investigating antisense oligonucleotide (ASO)-mediated therapies in mouse models of dementia. He has experience writing manuscripts and enjoys helping fellow researchers review their scientific communications.
