The Complete Schema Design Process

Updated August 2023:
We are no longer accepting new design requests.

Please contact Catie Newsom-Stewart (c.newsom-stewart@wustl.edu) and Abby Kimball (abigail.kimball@wustl.edu) to inquire about alternative resources for your project.

Submit a request

To begin the process, submit a complete schema design request using our simple online form (see bottom of this page).

  • We ask that you complete slides 2-4 of our Client Resources and Feedback File and upload them during the submission process. This will provide our designers with one or more rough sketches of your desired design as well as any specific requirements for the piece.

We will match you with a team of designers

After you submit a request, a team of designers will be chosen to work on your project for you. Once a team has been assigned, you will be informed and your team will work to schedule a meeting with you. Due to COVID-19, all meetings will be held on Zoom until further notice.

Meet with your team of designers

After you submit a request, a team of designers will be chosen to work on your project for you. Once a team has been assigned, you will be informed and your team will work to schedule a meeting with you.

Your team of designers will create a mock schema

Based off of your initial meeting, your designers will generate a vector graphic image. This mock schema will generally be sent to you within one week.

  • This schema will not be polished – the goal is to confirm the content and layout of the design before adding polished details.

You review the mock schema and request one round of major revisions

At this point, major structural or content changes can be discussed with the designers via email or Zoom.

Designers will use your requests to create a polished draft of your figure

Following your input, the designers will generate a completed draft of your graphic.

Multiple iterations of minor requests and revisions

At this stage, any additional changes such as coloration, minor positioning, text, and formatting will be communicated via email to your designers. You will able to request up to three rounds of minor edits. In order to make sure your schema is generated in a timely fashion, no major edits will be accepted in this phase.

Final schema is completed, sent to you, and the project is closed

Final documents will be provided in a variety of digital formats as well as original artwork (Adobe Illustrator or SVG) files.

Disclaimer: Unfortunately, we cannot generate schema for graded student work. If you would like help generating a figure for graded work, we will happily set up a Schema Design Consultation with you to offer assistance designing and generating your own schema.
